In July 1945, the Arthur Hope College of Technology, today known as the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, was established. One of the top engineering schools in the nation, the Institute has made significant contributions to both academic and technological advancements. Since that momentous occasion, it has established the bar for distinction as an excellent institution with technological know-how. To pursue M.S. (by Research) and Ph.D. programmes in all fields of study, this institution provides nine UG programmes and eleven PG programmes with reputable research supervisors. All departments have highly skilled personnel and first-rate facilities for infrastructure.

A total of Rs. 12.5 crores in TEQIP Phase II financing from the World Bank, together with Rs. 5 crores each for the establishment of two centres of excellence, support this Institute. The college got the "GREEN CAMPUS OF THE YEAR - 2013" award from Dr. Rangasamy, Chief Minister of Pondicherry, on April 4th for the actions made on environmental initiatives, as well as the "BEST COLLEGE AWARD" for the year 2010 from the State Government of Tamil Nadu. A certificate from the India Book of Records was also given to the Institute for its participation in the National Symposium on Zero Paper event.

Ideas are the seed of innovation, and innovation is the essential spark behind all human change, advancement, and development. To promote research and the creation of new products on campus, the school founded the Student Research Foundation (SRF) with this as its guiding principle. Through SRF, creative suggestions from students are given the resources and technical assistance they need to become fully developed products and solutions.

GCT has joined the list of institutions taking part in the Department of Higher Education, MHRD, Government of India's Quality Enhancement in Engineering Education (QEEE) initiative. The Computer Science Department has been equipped to participate in the Live Classes and virtual labs/tutorials conducted by IIT Professors as part of this initiative.

Strong partnerships exist between GCT and a variety of businesses, R&D facilities, and government agencies. The industry professionals regularly collaborate to update the curriculum and keep it current with expectations in the workplace.

The GCT Alumni Association has helped students who are struggling financially. Some GCT alumni achieved the greatest honour in the world. For example, the Internet Hall of Fame will induct twenty-four persons who helped shape the Internet into the worldwide, paradigm-shifting platform that it is today. Dr. S. Ramani, a graduate of GCT's Electrical Branch class of 1962, is one of the 24 inductees.
